The neurosciences service line at Children’s of Alabama (COA) has once again been named one of the top pediatric neurosurgery providers in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in its 2024-2025 Best Children's Hospitals rankings.
COA’s neurosciences service line, which includes both neurology and neurosurgery, secured the No. 26 spot out of 287 hospitals evaluated in the specialty, marking another year of excellence for the institution.
The neurosciences service line is made up in part by members of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Neurosurgery Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, whose dedication and expertise continue to drive outstanding outcomes in neurosurgical interventions.
This is the 15th consecutive year that COA has participated in the U.S. News & World Report rankings program. COA’s inclusion in the rankings is based on a rigorous evaluation process that examines critical factors such as patient safety, infection prevention, and the adequacy of nursing staff. The rankings are also influenced by surveys completed by more than 15,000 pediatric specialists, who provide insights into where they would send their most complex cases.
“This ranking underscores the dedication of our pediatric neurosurgery team to delivering world-class care,” said James Johnston, M.D., professor in the UAB Department of Neurosurgery and director of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery. “We are proud to be recognized and will continue our mission to serve the children and families who depend on us.”
Earlier this year, the adult neurosciences service line at UAB also received recognition in U.S. News & World Report's 2024-2025 Best Hospital rankings, securing the No. 42 spot among 1,227 evaluated hospitals in the neurology and neurosurgery specialty.
The U.S. News & World Report Best Children’s Hospitals rankings were first introduced in 2007, and both UAB and COA began participating in the rankings during the 2010-2011 cycle.
This recognition reflects COA’s ongoing commitment to providing top-tier care for pediatric patients with neurological disorders.
