Brandon Rocque, M.D., MS, professor in the University of Alabama Department of Neurosurgery Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery, recently served as an invited faculty lecturer at the 2024 International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) Education Course. This year’s event took place in Yerevan, Armenia, from June 23 to 25.
Rocque delivered a lecture titled “Corpus Callosotomy and Epilepsy Program Development in Resource-Constrained Environments,” sharing his expertise in developing epilepsy surgery programs in low-resource settings, with a focus on corpus callosotomy. His presentation was part of a broader curriculum designed to enhance the skills and expand the knowledge of pediatric neurosurgeons from around the world.
The ISPN Education Course, an annual event, brought together leading experts in pediatric neurosurgery from various countries, including Brazil, China, Germany and Russia. The course covered a wide range of topics, including hydrocephalus, spinal surgery, epilepsy and oncology, with lectures from globally recognized specialists in these fields.
In addition to his lecture on epilepsy surgery, Rocque also presented on spina bifida care, craniocervical fixation and pineal region tumors. His contributions to the course reflect his dedication to advancing the field of pediatric neurosurgery, both within his practice at Children’s of Alabama and on a global scale.
The event also featured a hands-on course designed for medical students, using a brain tumor simulation model that allowed participants to practice craniotomy, dura opening and white matter dissection to locate deep-seated tumors.
The ISPN, founded in 1972, is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of children requiring neurosurgical care worldwide through scientific research and international cooperation. The Education Course is a key part of the ISPN’s mission to advance the field of pediatric neurosurgery through the dissemination of knowledge and skills.
