U.S. News and World Report’s 2018 Best Hospitals report ranks UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery No. 36 in the nation, marking the fifth consecutive year the Department of Neurosurgery has ranked in the top 50 Neurology and Neurosurgery programs in the country.
“The remarkable faculty, trainees and staff that are involved in patient care here at UAB continue to provide outstanding and cutting-edge care to our neurosurgical patients,” said UAB Department of Neurosurgery Chair James Markert, M.D. “We are honored that their dedication and expertise are reflected in these rankings for the fifth year in a row.”
A hospital's overall Neurology and Neurosurgery score is based on various data categories, including volume of high-risk patients, nurse staffing and patient survival. As a highly ranked institution, UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery ranked above average in patient survival, patient safety, patient volume, nurse staffing, advanced technologies and patient services.
UAB Neurology and Neurosurgery is one of 10 UAB specialties ranked in the nation’s top 50 by U.S. News and World Report. Overall, UAB topped several peer institutions, including the University of North Carolina and Emory University, which had five and four ranked specialties respectively, and UAB again ranked No. 1 in the state of Alabama.
“Consumers have many choices when deciding where to turn for health care, and UAB’s continued recognition as the best hospital in Alabama and one of the leading academic medical institutions in the nation is a reflection of the quality of care delivered by our faculty and staff day after day,” said Will Ferniany, Ph.D., CEO of UAB Health System. “The consistent excellence of our patient care, our cutting-edge research and innovative therapies mark UAB as the destination of choice in Alabama, the Southeast and beyond.”
