Department of Neurosurgery David Hart White Endowed Professor Erwin Van Meir, Ph.D., has been recognized by Research.com as one of the best research scientists in the field of medicine.
With nearly 300 publications garnering more than 56,000 citations, Van Meir ranks in the top 25 researchers in Alabama and the top 3,500 in the United States. In the world, Van Meir ranks in the top 6,500. This places Van Meir among the top 10% of medical researchers of those examined in this edition of the Best Scientists Ranking, globally.
In this third edition of the ranking, more than 166,000 scientists were examined – 70,000 being in the field of medicine.
Position in the ranking is based on a researcher’s discipline H-index (D-index). Only scientists with a D-index of at least 70 are included in the ranking. In comparison to the general H-index, the D-index accounts only for publications and citation values in a specified field. These metrics are both used to measure the productivity and impact of a scholar’s work.
According to Research.com, their best scientists ranking is “a reliable lineup of leading scholars from the area of medicine, based on a detailed analysis…from multiple bibliometric data sources.”
Van Meir’s primary research focus is brain cancer, a complex and multifaceted subject. The Van Meir lab, seated within the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, aims to translate novel research findings into clinical trials with the hope of improving and expanding cancer treatment options.
