Celebrating national recognition

Written by
UAB Medicine this week has received a tremendous public recognition from U.S. News & World Report that is not only a marked step toward our goal of being the Preferred Academic Medical Center, but is a true testament to the tireless dedication of faculty and staff to make UAB Medicine a premier institution.

UAB Medicine was honored on the latest U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list and once again was named the No. 1 Hospital in Alabama. Additionally, ten specialty service lines were nationally ranked, an increase over last year, and four others were named High Performing.

Those specialties and their 2017 ranks are:

  • Cardiology and Heart Surgery – No. 30 (up from No. 37 in 2016)
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology – No. 21 (up from No. 30 in 2016)
  • Ear, Nose & Throat – No. 50
  • Geriatrics – No. 47 (up from High Performing in 2016)
  • Gynecology – No. 26
  • Nephrology – No. 14 (up from No. 20 in 2016)
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery – No. 34
  • Pulmonology – No. 17 (up from No. 29 in 2016)
  • Rheumatology – No. 10 (up from No. 11 in 2016)
  • Urology – No. 20 (up from No. 49 in 2016)
  • Cancer (High Performing)
  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (High Performing up from unranked in 2016)
  • Orthopedics (High Performing)
  • Rehabilitation (High Performing)
USNWR also lauds UAB for high performance in seven adult procedures/conditions: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery.

Rankings like USNWR are just one tool available to patients as they make informed decisions about their health care, and the recognition helps UAB grow both its national and international academic reputation.

I’d like to take the opportunity to offer my sincerest gratitude to all UAB Medicine faculty and staff and UAB Health System leadership for their hard work and dedication. External recognition such as this is truly a reflection of the people who work diligently to make UAB the place where patients want to be treated by world-class providers; where medical and graduate students want to learn; and where scientists want to conduct cutting-edge research. This achievement would not be possible without all of you and the work that you do.
