UAB Graduate Medical Education welcomed 189 new residents and fellows Wednesday, June 19, during an orientation session in the West Pavilion Atrium.

Steven Theiss, M.D., has been named the first chair for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UAB’s School of Medicine. Theiss has served as the interim chair since Orthopaedics was elevated from a division to the 27th department in the School of Medicine in November 2017.
Last Friday, a bus carrying 26 UAB residents from the Department of Pediatrics was involved in a severe accident following a retreat at Camp McDowell. The School of Medicine leadership is extremely grateful to everyone who has been involved in the care for its residents and their families during this difficult time.
The Cone brothers–Ryan Cone, M.D. (PGY-2) and Brent Cone, M.D. (PGY-1)–will have the same rotation at Highlands Hospital in January and February of 2019. They are both residents in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and perhaps most notably, they are also identical twins.
Dr. Steven Theiss, M.D., the John D. Sherrill Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Interim Chair of the UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, has been elected to the membership committee of the American Orthopaedic Association for a five-year term.
Bradley Wills, M.D., a PGY-4 resident in the UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, won first place for his poster titled, "Outcomes with Overlapping Surgery at a Large Academic Medical Center."
The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery in the Department of Surgery became the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery on October 1, 2017.
