Marcia Chesebro, M.D., MPH, associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine, has been named chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. She began the role on March 1.
Chesbro joined the Huntsville medical faculty in 1995. She’s held many roles at the Huntsville campus over her 20 years as a faculty member, including medical student clerkship Director, Family Medicine Residency director, Family Medicine clinic director and assistant chair. She served as interim chair and chair of Family Medicine from 2001-2012, and was again named interim chair in 2015.
“During her recent stint as interim Regional Chair, she has distinguished herself by her collaborative and servant-leadership style, which has improved the atmosphere and morale in the department,” said Roger D. Smalligan, M.D., MPH, regional dean of the Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. “Dr. Chesebro has remained committed to the strong education of our medical students and residents, has recruited and retained new faculty members, and has expanded the department’s reach into the community by accepting new contracts and increased patient volume in the outpatient clinic.”
A native of Huntsville, Chesebro graduated from the School of Medicine, where she did her third- and fourth-years on the Huntsville campus, and completed her residency training at the University of Alabama Family Medicine Residency Program in Tuscaloosa. She joined the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus faculty after residency, staying for seven years before relocating to Huntsville for a job in private practice.
Chesebro has received several awards throughout her career, including the Outstanding Family Practice Faculty (present annually by the residents), Dean’s Leadership Award, Caring Award, and Outstanding Service Award.
