Equal Access Birmingham will host its fourth annual Heart + Sole 5K and Fun Run Saturday, Aug. 26, to raise funds for the School of Medicine student-run free clinic, which provides health care and education to Birmingham’s homeless and uninsured population
The Heart + Sole 5K and Fun Run, a family-friendly event open to participants of all ages, will begin at 8 a.m. in Crestline Village in Mountain Brook. A light breakfast will be provided for all runners.
Early bird registration will be open until Aug. 6. After Aug 6, advance registration is $25 per person for the 5K and $10 per child for the fun run. Registration cost includes a T-shirt. On-site registration for the 5k, beginning at 7 a.m. Aug. 20, is $30 (cash only).
There is also a $25 Sleep-in option for those who would like to support and get a shirt, but not run.
Individuals can register as part of a team representing departments within the UAB School of Medicine and UAB Hospital. Runners from the department team with the most registered participants will receive lunch with Selwyn M. Vickers, M.D., F.A.C.S., senior vice president for Medicine and Dean of the UAB School of Medicine.
EAB was created in 2005 to both improve healthcare access for underserved populations in the Birmingham area and provide UAB medical students with service learning experiences. Student volunteers see approximately 400 patients per year at the EAB Clinic at the Church of the Reconciler, which opened in downtown Birmingham in November 2012.
