Equal Access Birmingham will host its fifth annual Heart + Sole 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, Aug. 18, to raise funds for the School of Medicine's student-run free clinic, which provides health care and education to Birmingham’s homeless and uninsured population.
The Heart + Sole 5K and Fun Run, a family-friendly event open to participants of all ages, will begin at 8 a.m. at Crestline Elementary School in Mountain Brook, with a Kids Fun Run beginning at 8:30 a.m. Early bird registration is $25 per person and will close Aug. 3. Advanced registration is $30 per person and will close Friday, Aug. 17 at 10:00 p.m. Registration fee includes a race packet and t-shirt. Packet pick up and on-site registration will be from 6:45 a.m.-7:30 a.m. on Aug. 18.
There is also a $30 Sleep-in option for those who would like to support and get a shirt, but not run. Pick up for this option will be available from 7:00 a.m.-9:30 a.m.
Individuals can register as part of a team representing departments within the UAB School of Medicine and UAB Hospital. The department with the most participation will be awarded a prize. Following the 5K, food, drinks and music will be provided with give aways from local businesses available for participants.
EAB was created in 2005 to both improve healthcare access for underserved populations in the Birmingham area and provide UAB medical students with service learning experiences. Student volunteers see approximately 400 patients per year at the EAB Clinic at the Church of the Reconciler, which opened in downtown Birmingham in November 2012.
