This time of year, medical students in the Cooking Healthily on a Penny (CHOP) group spend their Saturdays at the East Lake Farmers Market to demonstrate healthy recipes, but in the wake of COVID-19, they had to get creative to meet their mission.
CHOP and the UAB School of Medicine Office of Service Learning will host a virtual cooking class fundraiser with award-winning Chef Chris Hastings of Hot & Hot Fish Club on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 6:30 p.m.
During this one-hour cooking class, Chef Hastings will cook Grilled Chicken with 3 Bean Salad step by step with participants virtually via Zoom and share wine pairings by Will Abner.
During the session, Hastings and Abner will provide “pro-tips” relevant for any home chef and will answer all your questions about food and wine.
Course registration is $20, and you can register for the course online. A few days before the cooking class, Hot & Hot will email the recipe, ingredients list and equipment list to registrants.
If you are unable to attend the cooking class live, all registrants will receive an edited video of the class, so you can cook with Chef Hastings when it fits your schedule.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit Promoting Empowerment and Enrichment Resources (PEER, Inc), which CHOP pairs with throughout the fall at the P.E.E.R., Inc. East Lake Farmers Market by hosting cooking demonstrations and providing recipe samples from a booth. Through this, students inspire healthy cooking on a budget and advocate for the importance of nutrition in health.
