The UAB Heersink School of Medicine’s Department of Biomedical Engineering recently showcased its research at the Biomedical Engineering Society’s (BMES) annual meeting, the world’s leading professional society committed to advancing human health and well-being through biomedical and bioengineering innovation. The conference, known for drawing thousands of engineers, researchers, and students from around the globe, provided an opportunity for UAB's faculty, students, and administrators to highlight groundbreaking work and foster connections in the field.

Twelve representatives from UAB, including Program Administrator Paula Evans, faculty members M.K. Sewell-Loftin, Ph.D., Juhi Samal, Ph.D., and Ho-Wook Jun, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow Ian Berg, Ph.D., and a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students, attended the event. The UAB team delivered two podium presentations and presented ten research posters, capturing the attention of attendees and sparking discussions about potential partnerships and collaborations.

“BMES is an amazing opportunity for our students and professors to show off the remarkable work being done here at UAB,” said Sewell-Loftin. “There are thousands of engineers from all over the world who come to hear our presentations and learn about potential opportunities in our department. One of my favorite parts of the conference is when I'm working our booth in the Exhibit Hall, and I get to highlight the accomplishments of my colleagues and demonstrate what makes UAB-BME such a special place.”

The UAB delegation included undergraduates Braden Cornelius, Nick Reyes, and Sree Nataraj, as well as graduate students Rory Greer, Javi Dominguez De Leon, Vaishali Bala, and Bronte Johnson, all of whom contributed to the department’s growing reputation for excellence in biomedical engineering research and innovation.

The BMES meeting was a pivotal moment for the UAB Biomedical Engineering Department, underscoring its commitment to impactful research and providing students and faculty alike with a valuable platform for learning and networking.
