Richard O. Burney, M.D., MSc, division director and associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been named the Inaugural Holder of the J. Benjamin Younger, M.D. - Roensch Family Endowed Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the UAB Heersink School of Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The appointment was approved by the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees during the April meeting.
Burney received his Bachelor of Science from the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, in 1991. He completed his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md, in 1997. He completed his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash, in 2001, and his REI fellowship at Stanford University in California in 2007. He also has a MSc in immunogenetics from Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar.
Burney serves as a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American Society for Reproductive Medicine- Endometriosis Special Interest Group, the Society for Reproductive Investigation, and the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society
His clinical interests include endometriosis, infertility, reproductive endocrine disorders, tubal factor infertility, primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
