It is the mission of the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology to provide the most up-to-date and effective care to patients; to advance the nation's scientific understanding of women's health; and to translate this new knowledge into improved diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology provides subspecialty expertise in gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, prenatal genetic and structural diagnosis, pelvic floor and urogynecologic disorders, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, in vitro fertilization and human reproductive genetics, adolescent gynecology and primary care in obstetrics and gynecology. The department consistently ranks highly in terms of NIH research dollars when rankings were published. For FY 2014, the UAB Department of OB/GYN ranked second in the U.S. in terms of NIH grant awards.

Departmental faculty have a regional, national, and international reputation for quality clinical and especially tertiary subspecialty care. The department is also renowned for its clinical and translational research and its training of residents and sub-specialists. Training is provided for medical students and residents, and fellowships are available in the areas of gynecology and pelvic floor disorders, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecologic oncology, and clinical genetics (in partnership with the Department of Genetics).
