Welcome to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Our department has a truly rich, storied history of providing superlative primary obstetric and gynecologic care as well as subspecialty expertise in gynecologic oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, prenatal genetic and structural diagnosis, pelvic floor and urogynecologic disorders, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, in vitro fertilization and human reproductive genetics, adolescent gynecology, and minimally invasive surgery.
  • Patient Care

The UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a regional, national, and international reputation for clinical excellence and innovation, and we are consisently ranked among top-tiered hospitals in the nation by US News and World Report. The UAB Women & Infants Center houses one of largest neonatal ICUs in the United States and the only level four NICU in Alabama. UAB is also consistently honored with the America's Best Hospital designation by the Women's Choice Award for obstetrics, bariatric surgery, heart care, cancer care, and as a best breast center practice. Additionally, UAB recently became one of the nation's leading hospitals in robotic surgery volume.

  • Research
The department is consistently ranked in the top ten in extramural NIH research dollars. Additional, the department is recognized for its contributions and leadership in several important cooperative research groups, including the MFMU Network, Pelvic Floor Disorders Network, and NRG Oncology. Our faculty currently hold R01 awards in addition to U-type and K-type awards, and our department is one of two in the US to hold more than one gynecologic cancer SPORE award (cervix and ovary). Lastly, the department continues to be highly dedicated to training and mentoring the next generation of clinician-researchers.
  • Education

One of our department’s greatest strengths are the training programs, particularly the residency and subspeciality fellowships. The residency is a top-ranked program, and the fellowship programs are highly competitive and attract candidates across the United States. The educational programs are well-known for the volume, complexity of cases, didactics and consistent, high level commitment to excellence to clinical care, quality and outcomes, and communication.

  • Leadership and Service

Numerous faculty and trainees have served as leaders for multiple professional societies including SGO, SMFM, AUGS, SGS, ASRM, SASGOG, ABOG, NIH (NICHD and NCI), CDC, and the WHO. In addition to serving all patients that come to UAB, there is a true dedication and commitment to raising the bar for women’s healthcare on a national and international level. The department strives to train and mentor the next generation of leaders in women’s healthcare.

Our department is committed to a balanced environment, with a commitment to increasing health access, through clinical care, education, and research.
Again, welcome to the UAB Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and I hope you enjoy learning more about who we are and what we offer. It’s truly an honor and privilege to be a member for this department. I am inspired by our teamwork, commitment, and genuine sense of camaraderie.
