The University of Alabama at Birmingham has a 3-year fellowship program designed to train subspecialists in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.  One fellow per year is selected on a competitive basis from a national group of applicants who have completed a residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The first year of the fellowship is composed of 12 months of patient care.  During this time, fellows improve their skills in transvaginal ultrasound, learn to perform intrauterine inseminations, and see patients in the office with the Board-Certified Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility faculty.  Fellows perform hysterosalpingograms, perform surgery with attending faculty and participate in egg retrievals and embryo transfers with IVF faculty.  In addition, fellows learn skills in andrology, and see male infertility patients with Dr. Peter Kolettis, a urologist at UAB who works with our team.

The second year of the fellowship is composed of 12 months of research.  The fellows choose a project and learn specific laboratory skills after discussion with the Fellowship Director. During this year, the fellow spends a great deal of time in the laboratory collecting data for his or her thesis.

The third year of the fellowship is composed of 6 months of research and 6 months of elective time, including pediatrics and medical endocrinology clinic.  Fellows will also spend time in the IVF lab. Fellows have ample time to write their thesis and to submit it for publication before completing the fellowship program.  The fellowship Program Director meets with fellows on a regular and ongoing basis at all levels of the fellowship program to review progress.

The Division holds several education conferences monthly.  Attending, fellows, residents and students on service attend these didactic conferences.  In addition, residents on the service present reviews of pertinent topics in reproductive endocrinology during this didactic time, and present their research projects for discussion and input.

On Wednesdays, an IVF meeting is held.  The Division also participates in a weekly resident conference on Friday at noon.
