Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute

Leading the way in precision medicine

Precision medicine is a concept reshaping how we think about human health, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. It focuses on individual patients to understand how their lifestyles, behavior, environment, and genetics interact to affect their health. More importantly, this allows a systematic approach to integrate these factors into the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease tailored to the individual patient.

At UAB, we integrate efforts related to discovery with implementation studies to advance new approaches to precision medicine to the clinic as rapidly as possible. Our multidisciplinary efforts in these domains capitalize on the strengths of the UAB Health System, UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, and our strategic partners, HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology and Southern Research.

We are Precision Medicine at UAB.

Precision medicine encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease when intervention is tailored to individual data characteristics. Precision therapeutics employs genome-directed information, lifestyle, family and medical history in collaboration with physicians to guide patients on their journey to health solutions. The mission of the Hugh Kaul Precision Medicine Institute (PMI) is to support and to accelerate the implementation of precision medical care through research, service, and education.
