The Department of Radiation Oncology Quality Program strives to promote a strong culture of safety and foster congenial collaboration to enable better care for our patients in the Birmingham area and across the state.

Vision statement: To deliver world class patient-centered care in a workplace free of error.

Mission statement: To promote the highest achievable standard of patient care and research through a culture that focuses on safety, consistency, efficiency, and robust processes.

The Quality Steering Committee, led by the Medical and Quality Director D. Hunter Boggs, M.D., is responsible for directing the department’s Quality Program and aligning departmental goals with that of the institution. It reports to the department’s executive committee and oversees Clinical Operations Performance Improvement Committee (COPIC) and the Technology and Software Steering Committee, which in turn coordinate multiple working groups (see chart below).

In 2023, a notable quality goal was achieved when UAB became the first radiation oncology practice in the state to become accredited by the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) through APEx - Accreditation Program for Excellence®. APEx is a rigorous national radiation oncology quality accreditation standard that required multiple years of preparation and work from the entire department. Read more here.
