This program is not a degree-granting program and does not make admissions decisions for UAB applicants. Interested and qualified graduate trainees who have been accepted to the UAB Graduate School and are currently enrolled in a doctoral program with an emphasis on Neuroscience research are eligible for enrollment in the Roadmap Scholars Program. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident from at least one of the groups described below:
1. Individuals who have faced challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances (section A of the Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity);
2. Students with disabilities (physical or mental) as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (section B of the Notice of NIH’s Interest in Diversity);
3. Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds as defined in section C of the Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity:
- Were or currently are homeless, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act;
- Were or currently are in the foster care system, as defined by the Administration for Children and Families;
- Were eligible for the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program for two or more years;
- Have/had no parents or legal guardians who completed a bachelor’s degree (read more);
- Were or currently are eligible for Federal Pell grants;
- Received support from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) as a parent or child;
- Grew up in one of the following areas: a) a U.S. rural area, as designated by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Rural Health Grants Eligibility Analyzer, or b) a Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services-designated Low-Income and Health Professional Shortage Areas (qualifying zip codes are included in the file). Only one of these two possibilities listed can be used as a criterion for the disadvantaged background definition.
