The Summer in Biomedical Science (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program provides an opportunity for young people who are sophomore or junior level college undergraduates to be instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant clinical and scientific community.  Fifteen (15) students who have finished their sophomore or junior year of college will be accepted into the 8-week paid summer program (June 5 - July 28, 2024) to work with UAB faculty members on mentored research projects. SIBS students will receive a stipend of $3,200 for their participation in the program. Campus housing will be provided, but travel expenses are not covered.

SIBS is intended for students with a desire to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences. The Program is open to students having no local campus access to research experiences and are underrepresented in the sciences.  We anticipate that successful candidates will typically demonstrate grade point averages of 3.0 ("B") or higher, especially in science, math and related areas.

The deadline for submitting the online application is February 28, 2024.  A selection committee will review all completed applications starting March 1st and will make awards on a rolling basis beginning in mid-March.  After acceptance, participants will be assigned to individual UAB scientists based on their stated scientific interests.  Each student will work in a different laboratory on a research project that is directly under the supervision of the senior scientist or a senior member of the research group.

Scientists are members of multiple departments and centers at UAB, including the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center, and the Departments of Biochemistry, Cell, Developmental, and Integrative Biology, Environmental Health Sciences, Genetics, Medicine,  Microbiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology, as well as Graduate Biomedical Sciences Graduate Themes and the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD-PhD program).

During the summer, SIBS participants will participate in a seminar series designed to give insight into both the basic science and the clinical science aspects of common diseases.   In addition, SIBS participants will meet with current graduate, medical, and MSTP students to discuss medical and graduate training.

At the end of the summer, SIBS participants will participate in the Summer Research Expo, a poster session showcasing the research done by undergraduate summer interns from a number of UAB programs.   They will present their research findings to mentors and other participants. A 5-10 page final report is required, written in the format of a scientific publication and poster presentation.  By the end of the program SIBS participants will be well equipped to know what a career in biomedical sciences might entail.

Our Other Summer Program - PARAdiGM
Our other summer program, Preparation for Graduate and Medical Education (PARAdiGM) focuses on undergraduates from diverse and underrepresented minority backgrounds.  You can find more information about it here:  http://www.uab.edu/medicine/paradigm.

Eligible students may apply to both programs through the online application.
Select both "SIBS" and "PARAdiGM"  from the checkbox list; please do not complete two applications.
