Twitter is a social media channel that allows users to connect according to their shared interests, and the academic surgery community is no different. In our ongoing #FollowFriday series, we’re interviewing our most Twitter-savvy faculty about their online presence and how they use the platform to stay connected.

Social Media Tips from @UABSurgery:
- When taking a picture of someone else or when taking a group photo for social media, make sure everyone being photographed is comfortable with having their picture shared online. Doing this is as simple as asking, “Would anyone mind if I tweeted this?” before posting.
- When sharing content on social media, be sure that it does not violate UAB web policies or laws that govern the dissemination of public information, including UAB’s Digital Mass Communications and Content policy, UAB IT's Acceptable Use Policy, as well as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
- Remember to follow and mention @UABSurgery on Twitter to stay connected with us!

Why do you use Twitter? I first adopted Twitter for personal use but have found it to be a great tool for connecting with health professionals with similar interests and passions, as well as a great way to highlight the exciting things happening around UAB.
What do you tweet about? I like to tweet/retweet about activities and accomplishments within @UABSurgery, @UABSOM and, of course, @UABGISurgery. Occasionally, I use it to reflect on meaningful experiences at work or home and even post pictures of my family (#surgparenting) and dog (#surgpets). I think it’s important to allow that work-life integration to be evident on Twitter and hope it encourages the generation of young surgeons behind me that it is possible.
