The UAB Department of Surgery was recently awarded a training grant from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to support research fellowships for eight medical students, as part of the department’s Short-Term Research Experiences Advancing Medical Students program.
This program, known as STREAMS, offers summer research experiences to promising medical students in order to encourage these students to pursue careers in research, particularly research related to the mission of NIDDK. These 8- to 12-week mentored research experiences seek to increase student interest in academic medicine, while cultivating the student-to-physician pipeline.
Chair of the Department of Surgery Herbert Chen, M.D., and Vice Chair of Health Services Research for the Department of Surgery Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH, will serve as the program’s directors.
