Faculty from the departments of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering meet at their 2016 "Speed Dating" event to discuss collaborative projects.
After residents across the country celebrated their Match Day last Friday, the UAB departments of Surgery, Biomedical Engineering and Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine are preparing for their own “Match.com Day” for researchers in May.
As part of the new BME/Surgery/Anesthesiology Collaborative Pilot Research Program, faculty scientists from each of these departments will meet up for a mixer at West Pavilion on May 8. At the mixer, these scientists will “match” with other scientists from other departments who share their interests in order to explore potential research collaborations and encourage interdepartmental team-based research. This multidisciplinary event aims to provide researchers with an opportunity to partner up, develop ideas for new pilot projects and submit those ideas to be considered for funding.
Similar to the Department of Surgery and Department of Biomedical Engineering’s 2016 “Speed Dating” event for research collaborators – an event whose resulting collaborations brought in more than $1.5 million in extramural funding awards – this new “Match.com-style” program hopes to encourage professional partnerships between faculty from different departments that will result in the development of new, collaborative research projects.
To apply, researchers should send their NIH biosketch and a list of 10 keywords describing their clinical and research interests to their respective department chairs and program contacts by April 8. Then, join us on May 8 for the interdepartmental mixer in the West Pavilion Conference Center, starting at 3 p.m. Faculty who wish to submit their project ideas for funding consideration after the mixer should send their proposals to their department’s program contact by June 21.
