Four faculty from the Department of Surgery have been awarded 2019-2020 UAB Faculty Development Grants:

Collawn and Orandi will each receive a $10,000 Faculty Development Grant for their respective research proposals, “Molecular markers and exosomes in squamous cell carcinoma” and “Donor methamphetamine use in deceased donor kidney transplantation,” while Iwase will receive about $8,000 in grant funding for his project, “Genetically-engineered pig red blood cells for clinical transfusion.”
Jaskula-Sztul’s proposal, “SSTR2 expression in Hϋrthle cell lesions of the thyroid,” represents a collaboration between Jaskula-Sztul and the UAB Department of Pathology’s Diana Lin, M.D., and was also awarded a $10,000 Faculty Development Grant.
The purpose of the UAB Faculty Development Grant Program is to enable faculty to develop manuscripts, publications, presentations, grant applications, future research initiatives, creative works, scholarly activity, new skills, greater peer recognition and enhanced effectiveness as faculty.
As this year’s recipients, Collawn, Orandi, Iwase and Jaskula-Sztul will attend a research poster session this fall, hosted by the Office of the Provost and the Faculty Senate, where they will each present an overview of their individual projects.
