Former mentee of Dr. Herbert Chen and Dr. Renata Jaskula-Sztul, Danilea Carmona-Matos, presents her award-winning research at the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons 39th Annual Meeting last week in Durham, North Carolina.

Former mentee of Department of Surgery Chair Herbert Chen, M.D., and Assistant Professor of Surgery Renata Jaskula-Sztul, Ph.D., Danilea Carmona-Matos received a $1,000 travel scholarship, supported by Neurovision Medical Products, for the research she presented at the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons 39th Annual Meeting last week in Durham, North Carolina.

Carmona-Matos’ abstract, “Characterization of somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) expression and anti-proliferative effect of somatostatin analogues in aggressive thyroid cancers,” was selected as one of the top-scoring abstracts presented by a resident or fellow, as determined by the AAES Program Committee in their review.

Carmona-Matos, will also soon begin a year of biomedical research at UAB thanks to a fellowship from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Carmona-Mato, as well as 65 other medical and veterinary students, will be supported through HHMI’s Medical Research Fellows Program, which aims to develop the next generation of physician-scientists.
