The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery’s Ramaraju Rudraraju, Ph.D., and his team of multidisciplinary co-investigators recently received funding for their research proposal, “Machine Learning for Predicting Mechanical Circulatory Support Outcomes.” The award was given in response to a request for applications from the American Heart Association’s Institute for Precision Cardiovascular Medicine titled, “American Heart Association and Amazon Web Services 2.0 Data Grant Portfolio: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.” The proposed project will be funded in the amount of $100,000 per year for two years, starting July 1.

Rudraraju’s proposal aims to conduct the first comprehensive training and comparison of machine learning algorithms applied on mechanical circulatory support data. Mechanical circulatory support is a surgical intervention that is offered to patients with heart failure to improve circulation.

This project’s co-investigators include James K. Kirklin, M.D., director of the James and John Kirklin Institute for Research in Surgical Outcomes (KIRSO); Ryan Cantor, Ph.D., from KIRSO; Rongbing Xie, Dr.P.H., from KIRSO; Matthew Might, P.H.D., director of the Hugh Kaul Personalized Medicine Institute; and Thomas Anthony, M.S., from the UAB School of Engineering.
