Two Department of Surgery faculty were recently named recipients of the inaugural Champ Lyons Outstanding Clinician Award: The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Jamie Cannon, M.D., associate professor of surgery and director of the UAB Colorectal Surgery Program, and the Division of Transplantation’s Jared White, M.D., associate professor of surgery and director of the UAB Interdisciplinary Liver Tumor Board, as well as associate program director of the UAB General Surgery Residency.
The award provides a travel stipend to cover airfare and lodging expenses for the recipients to serve as visiting professors either in Sydney, Australia, or at the University of Cape Town in South Africa during its March 2019 CME Course.
The recipients were chosen by a committee of their peers because of their contribution to patient care.
“The committee reviewed nominations for six well-qualified faculty members,” said Marshall M. Urist, M.D., head of the award’s selection committee. “Drs. Cannon and White were selected based on a record of sustained excellence in patient care and teaching of residents and students.”
Urist said the committee considered factors including clinical case volume, outcomes, teaching, service on hospital committees, patient and resident evaluations.
