This past Saturday, the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Daniel Chu, M.D., spoke on the role of technology in surgery at the McWane Center’s Teens and Tech event. The Teens and Tech series allows students to engage in hands-on, technology-based learning experiences and to learn and practice technology-based skills. The theme of Saturday’s event was nanotechnology.
Chu spoke on the history of surgery and how advancements in robotics and nanotechnology can help physicians make surgical incisions even smaller than they are now.
The students were able to engage with an array of surgical instruments, which Chu provided via Ethicon during the event, and asked Chu frequent questions that he was as eager to answer as they were to ask.
Chu concluded by explaining to the students in attendance that the education required to become a surgeon is long but necessary, noting that he still looks forward to waking up and going to work every day.
