The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery’s Daniel Chu, M.D., discussed advancements in surgical technology at the McWane Center’s monthly Birmingham SCI Café last week at John’s City Diner.
The SCI Café is a joint project presented by the McWane Science Center and the Civitan International Research Center at UAB, giving attendees an opportunity to interact with scientists, researchers and enthusiasts from diverse fields. The theme of this month’s event was the digestive system.
Chu explained during his presentation how adding energy to laparoscopic instruments has modernized surgery by allowing surgeons to make incisions smaller and surgical procedures cleaner. The event attendees asked him a number of questions throughout and after his talk and got hands-on experience with various surgical instruments provided by Chu via Ethicon.
Chu concluded the presentation by giving examples of the strategies used by colorectal surgeons during procedures and quizzing his audience on their knowledge of the digestive system.
