UAB advance GI and minimally invasive surgery fellow Aimal Khan, M.D., and third-year integrated vascular surgery resident Victoria Aucoin, M.D., were each recently named a recipient of a travel award from the American College of Surgeons to attend the 2019 ACS Leadership and Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C., March 30 – April 2.
The Summit is an annual meeting for ACS members, leaders and advocates that provides comprehensive, specialized sessions on topics related to surgeon leadership, as well as interactive advocacy training with coordinated visits to congressional offices.
As recipients of this scholarship, Khan and Aucoin are expected to help promote available advocacy and political opportunities for ACS members, including the Summit, as well as the goals of the ACS Division of Advocacy and Health Policy. The DAHP is an arm of ACS that seeks to help federal agencies and congressional leaders find solutions for the current opioid epidemic, while limiting the legislative and regulatory burdens placed on physicians.
