Ten of our pediatric surgery faculty, nurses, trainees and lab members represented the Department of Surgery and Children’s of Alabama at Saturday’s Lace Up for a Cure 5K Walk to benefit the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB. Their team, the UAB Pediatric Surgery Tumornator Squad, and even a few of their furry friends teamed up to participate in the annual walk, sporting some of their favorite UAB Department of Surgery merch.
The team comprised a large group of participants – the Division of Pediatric Surgery’s Vincent Mortellaro, M.D., and Elizabeth Beierle, M.D.; Children’s OR nurses Brandi Davis and Mandi Bires; UAB general surgery residents Samantha Baker, M.D., Raoud Marayati, M.D., and Laura Stafman, M.D.; and a number of others from Beierle’s research lab – including pediatric surgery research fellow Alicia Waters, M.D., who serves as a member of the Young Supporters Board of the O’Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and organized the team in order to help others get more involved with the walk and the Cancer Center.
As a member of the Young Supporters Board, Waters helps raise money for the Cancer Center’s Mary Ann Harvard Young Investigator Grants through other annual events such as the Fiesta Ball, which will be held this year on May 3.
