Diana L. Farmer, M.D., chair of the Department of Surgery at UC Davis Health, headlined the Department of Surgery’s annual UAB Women in Surgery Lectureship and networking reception last Monday and Tuesday, April 1-2.
At Tuesday morning’s lectureship in Margaret Cameron Spain Auditorium, Farmer delivered a presentation on the role of serendipity in her scientific journey, describing her own professional trajectory as a surgeon-scientist and her work on stem cell therapies for pediatric patients. Farmer also met with a group of roughly 60 UAB faculty, fellows, residents and students the previous evening for a networking reception at EastWest.

"What a privilege it was to be this year's UAB Women in Surgery guest speaker and to do so at this great institution," Farmer said.
Established by the Department of Surgery in 2016 and held each spring, the UAB Women in Surgery Lectureship seeks to provide opportunities for camaraderie and community among women surgeons and to encourage women medical students to choose surgical specialties.
