Thanks to the generosity of UAB Professor of Pediatric Surgery Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., and Associate Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery Richard Stahl, M.D., two new Department of Surgery medical student awards will be introduced at this year's UAB School of Medicine Birmingham Campus Awards’ Luncheon on May 17:

Dr. Richard Stahl

• the Elizabeth Beierle Medical Student Award for Research and Community Service and
• the Richard Stahl Medical Student Award for Outstanding Team Building and Leadership Skills.

These awards honor the many contributions to the field of surgery and surgical education made by Beierle and Stahl, the latter of whom is now stepping down from his position as assistant director of the department's surgery clerkship program, after having already served as director of the program from 2011-2018.
