Four UAB medical students were named winners of the Department of Surgery’s annual medical student awards at the 2019 School of Medicine Birmingham Campus Awards reception on Friday, May 17. Among those students, three of them will soon join the department as general surgery residents after matching into the program in March.
Two of these awards, the Richard Stahl Medical Student Award for Outstanding Team Building and Leadership Skills and the Elizabeth Beierle Medical Student Award for Research and Community Service, were introduced at the reception on Friday and were inaugurally awarded to incoming UAB general surgery resident Adam Lucy and soon-to-be UT-Southwestern resident Bayley Jones, respectively. Beierle is currently a professor in the Division of Pediatric Surgery, while Stahl is currently an associate professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery.
The other two medical student awards distributed at Friday’s event recognize two former Department of Surgery faculty. Established in 2016, the Mary T. Hawn Award for Outstanding Woman Medical Student was named in honor of former Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery Director Mary Hawn, M.D., MPH, and was awarded, this year, to incoming general surgery resident Shelby Bergstresser.
Similarly, the Robert J. Cerfolio Award for Outstanding Medical Student in General Surgery, established in 2017 in honor of internationally known lung cancer surgeon and long-time UAB Surgery faculty member Robert Cerfolio, M.D., MBA, was awarded to Burke Smith, another incoming UAB general surgery resident.
UAB Medical Student Surgery Clerkship Director and Assistant Professor of Gastrointestinal Surgery Britney Corey, M.D., was also named the inaugural recipient of the Medical Student Career Advisor of the Year Award at this year’s awards reception, held this year at 6 p.m. at the UAB National Alumni Society House.
