The Department of Surgery welcomes five new faces to our faculty this summer: Panayotis Vardas, M.D.; David Northern, M.D.; Jonathan Black, M.D.; Jon Winkler, M.D., and Danielle Sutzko, M.D., M.S.

Vardas joins the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery this month as an assistant professor. Before joining the department, Vardas completed an integrated thoracic surgery residency at Indiana University and an advanced cardiac fellowship at Northwestern University.

Next month, Northern, Winkler and Black will join the Division of Acute Care Surgery. Northern, an active United States Air Force general surgeon, comes to UAB as a clinical assistant professor. Winkler, a previous Air Force trauma surgeon and commander of the UAB-based Special Operations Surgical/Critical Care Team, will also join the department as an assistant professor. Both Northern and Winkler will start Aug. 1.

Black is a recent graduate of the UAB Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and will stay with the Division of Acute Care Surgery, joining the faculty as an assistant professor Aug. 1.

Sutzko, who most recently completed an integrated vascular surgery residency at the University of Michigan, will soon join the UAB Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy as an assistant professor on Aug. 12.
