Department of Surgery faculty and staff developed a new mission and vision for the department at this year’s UAB Surgery Faculty Retreat on Aug. 17.
- Mission: The UAB Department of Surgery is dedicated to outstanding service and compassionate care for all people through discovery and innovation, while educating the next generation of surgical leaders.
- Vision: To be a global leader in academic surgery through compassionate care, innovative research and educational excellence.
The annual retreat, held this year at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa, consisted of a number of team-building activities such as interpreting attendees’ DiSC assessment results, as well as several personal and professional development sessions led by guest speakers.
In one afternoon session, UAB Medicine Chief Wellness Officer David Rogers, M.D., presented a talk on managing interpersonal conflict in the operating room.
Rogers described why conflict management is important and highlighted the potential consequences of various types of conflict for staff, surgeons and patients.
“Effective conflict management is leadership sustained through a challenging circumstance,” Rogers said.
The event’s second guest speaker, Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Services Administration Christy Lemak, Ph.D., FACHE, discussed personal financial planning opportunities specific to surgeons.
In her presentation, Lemak encouraged faculty to learn more about earning, spending, saving, borrowing and protecting their finances.
“It’s not too soon to get to know about this stuff,” she said.
The retreat ended with a dinner and games for faculty to mingle with their colleagues and enjoy time with their families.
