General surgery resident Samantha Baker, M.D., was named the 2019 Melanie Schultz Leadership Champion at this year’s UAB Geriatric Scholar Quality Symposium on Sept. 6.
Baker is the first physician to participate in the Geriatric Scholar Interprofessional Program and was consequently the first physician to graduate from the program at its annual symposium last week.
This year, the symposium celebrated its 10th anniversary and a decade of interprofessional collaboration in service of geriatric patient care at UAB.
Those who participate in the two-year program have the opportunity to work with providers from the Department of Medicine’s Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics and Palliative Care, and the Department of Interdisciplinary Practice and Training, as well as their fellow scholars across the UAB Health System.
The Melanie Schultz Leadership Champion Award that was presented to Baker recognizes one UAB Geriatric Scholar each year who exemplifies excellence in patient- and family-centered care, servant leadership, generosity of spirit and dedication to team success.
As Baker leaves the program, fellow general surgery resident Lauren Theiss, M.D., is now preparing for her first educational session as a member of the Class of 2021. She will begin this year’s Geriatric Scholar Interprofessional Program curriculum with a two-day workshop in October.
