The Department of Surgery traveled to Orlando, Florida, this week for the 15th Annual Academic Surgical Congress, where numerous faculty, residents, fellows and medical students from UAB gave talks, presented research or moderated sessions. Continuing its streak, UAB Surgery again led the pack in abstract submissions at ASC, boasting a total of 112 presentations — 27 more than last year — and roughly 57 presenters.

Four UAB faculty served on the event’s program committee, including Melanie Morris, M.D., John Porterfield, M.D., Emily Spangler, M.D., M.S., and ASC Program Committee Chair Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH. Dr. Morris was also named the next publications chair for the SUS and will be co-leading the ASC for the next two years. And in his inaugural year, the Society of University Surgeons President Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., kicked off the conference with an inspirational presidential address.

Five UAB faculty - Adam Beck, M.D., Daniel I. Chu, M.D., James M. Donahue, M.D.Benjamin J. Pearce, M.D., and Benjamin Wei, M.D. - were inducted into the Society of University Surgeons as members. And Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery Timothy W. King, M.D., Ph.D., MSBE, FAAP, FACS, was awarded Best Overall Manuscript by an AAS member by the Associate for Academic Surgery’s Publication Committee.

Alongside the many UAB presentations, the Department of Surgery won all ASC conference competitions including Surgical Jeopardy, the robotics competition, and the abstract submission contest, which generated a substantial buzz on social media. During the three-day conference, the @UABSurgery Twitter handle saw almost 16,000 tweet impressions, 416 profile visits, 93 mentions, and gained 25 new followers.
