Dr. Britney CoreyDepartment of Surgery Assistant Professor and former Director of the Medical Student Surgery Clerkship Britney Corey, M.D., FACS, was recently named director of the General Surgery Residency Program at UAB.

The General Surgery Residency Program at UAB provides an outstanding academic and clinical experience with many unique opportunities. These include: leading advanced scientific discovery in state-of-the-art laboratories and clinical outcome centers, international training opportunities, and innovative digital surgical simulation that allows for residents to be maximally prepared to lead modern surgical operating teams.

Training is integrated over our five primary sites on the UAB Campus: University Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, the Birmingham Veterans Administration Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Alabama and UAB Highlands Hospital. The General Surgery Residency Program at UAB is five years of clinical experience, with increasing responsibility each year.

Following years of innovation as a surgical educator and numerous accolades and awards, Dr. Corey was named director of the Medical Student Surgery Clerkship in 2018. Since her year as an administrative chief resident and subsequent fellow in the division of GI surgery at UAB she has been closely integrated with the UAB General Surgery residency program.

“Working as the director of the Medical Student Surgery Clerkship has allowed me to gain invaluable experience that I will be able to carry into my position as director of the General Surgery Residency Program,” said Corey.

The UAB Department of Surgery is grateful to John Porterfield, M.D. - former director of the General Surgery Residency Program- for his years of service and excellence in leadership. Porterfield will step into more clinical education and leadership opportunities in the coming months, including strategizing ways to fully embrace, support and integrate offsite surgeons in the UAB region.

“I am looking forward to stepping into a larger clinical leadership role,” said Porterfield. “I am confident in Dr. Corey’s capabilities and expertise as a leader, and I know that the General Surgery Residency Program has a very bright future with her at the helm.”

Porterfield has certainly left his leadership legacy with the current residents, including Chief Resident Tyler Wahl, M.D.

"Dr. Porterfield is the consummate surgeon who remains an advocate for his residents and patients,” said Wahl. “His mentorship and commitment to our education over the years has greatly influenced our transformation into surgeons. I personally feel honored to have been recruited and trained under his leadership and look forward to his future role in our program."
