UAB Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Lauren Tanner, M.D., FACS, has been named Chief of the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) Service within the Division of Acute Care Surgery in the UAB Department of Surgery. In 2019, Tanner was named director of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship and continues to serve as the co-director of the UAB Women in Surgery Program.
The EGS service is an active and high-volume clinical service within UAB Hospital. The service provides 24/7 in-house faculty coverage to provide expeditious care for patients presenting with emergent general surgical issues.
The EGS service interfaces routinely with other clinical care areas including Emergency Medicine, Hospitalists and Medical Intensive Care for patient evaluation and coordination of surgical care. A forward-focus for the EGS is to streamline care across these clinical areas and develop clinical care protocols for the most common emergency general surgery diagnoses.
Director of the Division of Acute Care Surgery, Jeffrey Kerby, M.D., Ph.D., sees Tanner playing a key role in streamlining care areas and care protocols as well as supporting efforts to optimize patient outcomes and decrease lengths of stay.
“I have full confidence that Dr. Tanner will play a huge role in supporting excellent patient care as Chief of the Emergency General Surgery Service,” said Kerby. “Excellent patient care is a value of ours here at UAB, and our clinical services-including Emergency General Surgery- reflect that.”
Tanner is honored to lead the EGS Service in this capacity and looks forward to supporting excellent patient care through improving processes and collaboration within the EGS Service.
“It is an honor to be given the opportunity to provide leadership to the Emergency General Surgery Service,” said Tanner. “As the Division of Acute Care Surgery continues to provide robust surgical support, we look forward to collaborating with various services across the hospital to enhance and streamline emergency surgical care to our UAB patients”
Tanner will join other clinical services leadership within the Division of Acute Care Surgery, including:
- Trauma Service Chief Daniel Cox, M.D.
- Burn Service Chief James Hwang, M.D.
- Inpatient Wound Care Service Chief Marty Vander Noot, M.D.
- Surgical Critical Care Service Chief Samuel Windham, III, M.D.
