Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Kristy Broman, M.D., M.P.H, and Associate Professor Kimberly Hendershot, M.D., were named co-directors of the department’s UAB Women in Surgery program, beginning Aug. 2020.

The Department of Surgery established the UAB Women in Surgery Program in 2016 to provide camaraderie and community for women surgeons and to encourage women medical students to choose surgical specialties.

In addition to leading special projects and initiatives throughout the year to support women surgeons, the WIS group hosts the annual Women in Surgery Lectureship each spring to celebrate the advancements of women in the field of surgery. They also have several social and educational events for the group to learn, grow and connect.
