The Department of Surgery welcomes Paige Porrett, M.D., Ph.D., to the Division of Transplantation as an associate professor of surgery. She will also serve as director of Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Transplantation as well as Clinical & Translational Research at the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute.
Porrett attended Northwestern University where she obtained a B.A. in French. She received her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine before moving to Philadelphia for surgical training at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn). At Penn, she completed a residency in general surgery, a fellowship in transplantation surgery, and a PhD in immunology.
While on the surgical faculty at Penn, Dr. Porrett started the third uterus transplant program in the United States in conjunction with colleagues in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. She also specialized in living donor kidney transplantation and was the surgical director for Penn’s living donor kidney transplant program.
Now, Porrett has established the first uterus transplant program at UAB, which will provide women with uterine factor infertility an innovative option for child-bearing using deceased donor organs. In fact, it is the first uterus transplant program in the Southeast and the fourth such program in the United States.
Chair of the Department of Surgery Herbert Chen, M.D., FACS, welcomes Porrett to the UAB Surgery family.
“Dr. Porrett is an incredible leader in the field of transplantation, and she has already done wonderful things here in the Department of Surgery,” said Chen. “I look forward to seeing her continue to grow the uterus transplant program, through both clinical and research efforts.”
