Mark H. Deierhoi Endowed Professor in Surgery and Director of the Division of Transplantation Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH, has been elected councilor-at-large of scholarship for the Society of University Surgeons (SUS).
In the past, Locke has served as SUS publications chair, which was most recently filled by Department of Surgery Assistant Professor Melanie Morris, M.D. Several other UAB Surgery faculty have served on the SUS Executive Council such as Past President Gregory Kennedy, M.D., Ph.D., and many UAB Surgery faculty serve on SUS committees.
“I look forward to representing UAB Surgery on this national platform,” said Locke. “Our faculty certainly has a reputation of excellence within professional surgical organizations, and it is an honor to contribute to that legacy through serving the members of the Society of University Surgeons.”
In her new role, Locke will oversee the resident research scholars, junior faculty and mid-career awards on an annual basis. She will also oversee any additional grant award processes which may arise during her three-year term. Beginning in 2022, the role will hold membership on the Nominating Committee, so Locke will be the inaugural liaison.
Locke will also attend Executive Council annual meetings to discuss matters to be presented to the Society at Large. At that time, Locke and other leadership will review candidates for election as well as any resolutions up for vote.
The Society of University Surgeons was established in 1938 as a surgical society whose members had completed a rigorous training program and held a faculty position at a United States medical school. Over the years, the SUS has continually grown in size and stature, and is now recognized as the world’s premier organization dedicated to the advancement of the surgical sciences.
