Incoming General Surgery Resident Emily Baird, M.D., was named an abstract winner in the American College of Physicians (ACP) National Abstract Competition.
Baird was one of five medical student winners selected in the clinical vignette category. According to the ACP, a clinical vignette is a report of one or more cases that illustrates a new disease entity, or a prominent or unusual clinical feature of an established disease. It may include a summary of pertinent patient history, physical findings, laboratory data, or management description.
Baird presented her winning abstract, “A Case Study Demonstrating Tolerance of the Gut to Large Volumes of Enteral Fluids in Burn Shock,” in e-poster form at the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting. Researchers found that voluntary enteral resuscitation is a viable option for treatment of patients with moderate burn shock, either complementing IV therapy or using as an alternative when IV therapy may not be available.
“Just as important as researching solutions for current problems, research for potential, future trauma situations allow us to be prepared,” said Baird. “I’m honored to be selected as an abstract competition winner, and I look forward to joining the UAB General Surgery Residency Program this summer.”
