Professor and Surgical Director of Kidney Transplantation Michael Hanaway, M.D., was named the 2021 Champ Lyons Outstanding Clinician Award.
Each year, a faculty award committee selects the Champ Lyons Outstanding Clinician. Recipients are selected based on their contribution to patient care, such as clinical case volume, outcomes, teaching, service on hospital committees, patient and resident evaluations.
Hanaway’s clinical interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation. His surgical focus is primarily on kidney transplantation and laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy.
Over the past 15 years, Hanaway has performed a high volume of laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and has one of the largest experiences in the U.S. Hanaway’s research interest has focused on induction therapy in kidney transplantation.
“I am honored to be named the 2021 Champ Lyons Outstanding Clinician Award,” said Hanaway. “Dr. Lyons has a wonderful legacy, and I hope to honor his legacy as I continue to provide excellent patient care in the realm of transplantation.”
In addition to recognition at the State of the Department address, award winners receive a stipend to deliver a talk at one of the department’s international collaborating sites. Previous winners have travelled to Australia and South Africa.
