Graduating Chief Resident Brett Melnikoff, M.D., was ceremonially recognized as a VA Medical Center Five Star Service recipient.
The Five Star Service Award, which recognizes team members who have enhanced service and exemplified the spirit of teamwork, is a high distinction. Often, a VA team member is designated for the award by a patient letter expressing their gratitude.
In Melnikoff’s case, he was recognized for ensuring a patient was able to say goodbye to his wife, who was receiving end-of-life care in the UAB Palliative Care Unit. Though the patient was supposed to be transferring to a rehabilitation facility that day, his wife was not expected to make it through the day, so Melnikoff personally transported the patient to UAB and back via wheelchair.
“This was a great example of the care we provide for our Veterans and their families,” said UAB Associate Professor and Assistant Chief of Surgical Services at the Birmingham VA Jayleen Grams, M.D., “He showed up in an absolutely incredible and meaningful way for this family. He is a real testament to the UAB General Surgery Residency program and what it is all about.”
Melnikoff attended medical school at Virginia Tech Carilion and recently completed his General Surgery Residency at UAB. He will continue his training at UAB in the 4/3 Cardiothoracic Residency as a PGY6.
“I’m honored to accept this award, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to compassionately serve our veterans,” said Melnikoff. “Within the bounds of ensuring patient safety, we strive to honor these patients who have scarified so much for us.”
