Dr. Rindi UhlichResident Rindi Uhlich, M.D., published “Use of continuous intercostal nerve blockade is associated with improved outcomes in patients with multiple rib fractures” in the Trauma Surgery and Acute Care Open.

The goal of the study was to help determine better ways to manage patients with multiple rib fractures.

Authors performed an analysis of trauma patients with multiple rib fractures from 2016 to 2018, comparing patients managed with continuous intercostal nerve blockade with local anesthetic delivered using a subcutaneous catheter with standard care.

Based on data gathered during the analysis, authors concluded that the addition of continuous intercostal nerve blockade helps to improve outcomes in patients with multiple rib fractures compared with standard care alone.

“Rib fractures are a serious injury and may result in significant morbidity and mortality,” said Uhlich. “This study has significant impact for trauma providers, highlighting another avenue for them to potentially improve their rib fracture patients’ experiences and outcomes.”
