Learning CommunitySeveral General Surgery Residents were selected for the honor of being mentors within the UAB School of Medicine (SOM) Housestaff Learning Community (LC).

The LC is designed to cultivate a community within a smaller group setting for UAB SOM medical students. Its monthly meetings provide an inclusive and safe space to discuss topics such as medical ethics, wellness, and professional identity formation, and opportunities to learn from other’s perspective to become well-rounded physicians.

A large part of the LC program is being engaged in the Birmingham community. Not only are informal gatherings a great venue to get to know other medical students, but member of LCs are also encouraged to pursue service, like volunteering for foodbanks.

Each LC group has a mentor, and this year, five General Surgery Residents were selected.

• Mary Smithson, M.D.
• Margaret Johnson, M.D.
• Adam Lucy, M.D.
• Connie Shao, M.D.
• Buke Smith, M.D.

“I’m very proud of these five residents and their dedication to medical education by mentoring medical students in these learning communities,” said Britney Corey, M.D., MACM, FACS, director of the General Surgery Residency Program. “Each of these students stepped up to the plate and will be great role models for medical students.”
