Division of Surgical Oncology Assistant Professor and Co-Director of UAB Women in Surgery Kristy Broman, M.D., MPH, was recently named one of this year’s UAB Center for Clinical and Translational Science Deep South Mentored Career Development Program Scholars. In total, seven new scholars were selected.
The program culminates in lead-author manuscripts and an extramurally funded research grant submission for scholars, including Broman’s project, “The role of affiliated networks of care on dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in cancer care.”
Her project will study the impact of health system integration, which is expected to uniquely affect rural patients living in the Deep South, on where patients receive cancer care and the quality of care they receive.
Acting as the Principal Investigator for the grant is Department of Medicine Professor Kenneth Saag, M.D., and Director of the Institute for Cancer Outcomes & Survivorship Smita Bhatia, M.D., will serve as the primary mentor.
The mentored career development – or KL2 award – program at the CCTS is sponsored by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health and seeks to prepare early-career faculty for a career in translational research.
The goal is to impart the knowledge, experience and perspective required to develop a network of independent investigators, with an emphasis on research that addresses diseases and health disparities that disproportionately affect the Deep South.
