The UAB Department of Surgery is pleased to welcome Assistant Professors Katelin Holmes, D.O., Trung Tran, M.D., FACC, and James Wright, M.D., effective Sept. 1.
Holmes joins the Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery. She received her medical degree with honors from the University of Pikeville Kentucky College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her general surgery residency at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and specialty fellowship training in breast surgical oncology at the OhioHealth Grant Medical Center.
Holmes’s surgical interests include the treatment of breast cancer with hidden scar surgical techniques, sentinel lymph node biopsy, reverse axillary lymphatic mapping, oncoplastic breast surgery, skin sparing mastectomy, nipple sparing mastectomy, prophylactic/risk reduction mastectomy, and male breast cancer. Additionally, her clinical interests include benign diseases of the breast, breastfeeding medicine, breast cancer survivorship, and breast cancer genetic predisposition/high risk screening.
Tran joins the UAB Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Hereceived his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and completed his general surgery internship at Texas Tech University Medical Center. He went on to complete a general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Medical Center, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Heart Institute.
With clinical interests in minimally invasive cardiac and thoracic surgeries, Tran specializes in coronary artery bypass grafts, aortic valve repairs and replacement, and the state-of-the-art TAVR procedure. He also has vast experience in mitral valve repairs, replacements, arrhythmia surgery, lung tumor, cancer, and chest wall resectioning. Board certified in general surgery, Tran is also a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association.
Wright joins the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery. He completed medical school at the University of Chicago, where he also completed his surgery residency. Wright then trained at Harvard Medical School as a clinical and research fellow in burns, completed his plastic surgery residency at UCLA Medical Center, and completed a fellowship in undersea and hyperbaric medicine at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine.
After a 28-year career in the Air Force, Wright retired and practiced as a hyperbaric and wound care physician in Washington State. Wright’s clinical interests are wound care, burns, reconstructive surgery, traumatic brain injury, and hyperbaric medicine.
