Zain Hashmi, M.D., an assistant professor with the Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, has been selected as one of five scholarship recipients by the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST).

The scholarship will cover the cost of tuition for EAST’s Leadership Development Workshop for the next three years, beginning with the 2022 workshop in January.

EAST is scientific organization that provides leadership and career development opportunities for early career surgeons through scholarship, fellowship, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The scholarship recipients are all early career trauma surgeons who have a demonstrated interest in becoming future leaders in trauma and acute care surgery.

Hashmi, who joined the Department of Surgery’s faculty this year after completing UAB’s Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, will be recognized and presented with a certificate at EAST’s 35th Annual Scientific Assembly in Austin next month.

“Since its inception, EAST has been instrumental in developing future leaders in trauma surgery,” Hashmi said. “I believe in order to succeed in influencing a positive change in the Alabama trauma system, as well as nationwide, I will greatly benefit from participating in these workshops.”
